Malcolm Pein on…The Only Move To Lose

It’s a tribute to the durability of the Sicilian Najdorf that players of the white pieces have tried just about every conceivable sixth move to counter it. When Najdorf afficionado Maxime Vachier- Lagrave had to face the Sicilian Najdorf recently at the Opera Euro Rapid online at Chess24, he went for the unusual 6.Rg1, preparing g2-g4.

M. Vachier-Lagrave – Ding Liren

Ding resigned – perhaps a tad premature, but Rg5 follows and White’s king is completely safe behind his pawn mass.

The only move to lose

Vachier-Lagrave – Radjabov, third-place play-off at the Opera Europe Rapid, after 45.Rh4-g4+ Ra5-g5. How does White draw and what is the only losing move, which, to general dismay, was what MVL played?

Any king move forwards or sideways draws. The game went: 46.Rxg5+?? Kxg5 47.Kf3 Kf5 48.Kf2 Kf4 0-1
