Malcolm Pein on…Pragg’s Progress

The Indian prodigy Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa went on the rampage when the Polgar Challenge got under way online at Chess24. The 15-year-old won eight games in a row to emerge as the clear leader after two days of the competition, which is part of the $100,000 (£73,000) Julius Baer Challengers Chess Tour. As well as prize money, the 20 young players have a chance to qualify for next year’s main tour.

There is also a team component to the event, with 10 players coached by Vladimir Kramnik and 10 by Judit Polgar. Against the odds, the team score was 25-25 after day one. Even less likely, at the end of the second day, the team score was 50-50, despite Pragg’s winning run and tally of 8.5/10 and the other two best individual performers being on Kramnik’s team.

Pragg should not have won an eighth successive game, as Bulgaria’s Nurgyul Salimova missed a win here.
