Malcolm Pein on…Kavalek’s Creativity

Today I conclude my tribute to the Czech-American GM Lubosh Kavalek (1943-2021). After escaping from Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, Kavalek settled in the USA. He won the US Championship three times and one gold and five bronze medals at Olympiads.

In 1979 Kavalek organised and played in a very strong 10-player double-round all-play-all tournament at Montreal. Playing and organising usually leads to disaster although Kavalek did remarkably well after a bad start. Karpov and Tal won with 12/18 ahead of Portisch, Ljubojevic, Timman and Spassky.

Kavalek was a highly creative player. This tremendous novelty in the Gruenfeld is still played today:

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bg5 Ne4 6.cxd5 Nxg5 7.Nxg5 c6!? (A pawn sacrifice, 7…e6 is standard)

Kavalek's Creativity

8.dxc6 Nxc6 9.e3! (If 9.d5 Ne5 10.e4 0–0 11.Be2 e6 12.Nf3 Nxf3+ 13.Bxf3 Qb6 with good counterplay) 9…e5 10.d5 Qxg5 11.dxc6 0–0 12.Be2?! (Now Black gets an extra pawn plus the compensation. Not 12.Bc4 Qxg2 13.Bd5 e4! 14.Bxe4 Bxc3+; 12.h4! is best then 12…Qd8 13.Qxd8 Rxd8 14.Bb5 bxc6 15.Bxc6 Rb8) 12…Rd8! 13.Qa4 Qxg2 14.Qe4 Qxe4 15.Nxe4 bxc6 16.Bc4 Kf8 17.Rc1 Ke7 18.Ke2 f5 19.Nc5 e4 20.b3 Bb2! 21.Rc2 Ba3 22.Na4
