Today’s Daily Telegraph chess column starts Malcolm Pein’s coverage of The Airthings Masters online tournament.

Not for the first time, he shows an interesting game by Daniil Dubov – and the trendy Catalan is back too.

Keep in mind there is a necessary time delay between publication in the Telegraph and on our blog and some of Malcolm’s words may seem prophetic…

Malcolm Pein on…The Airthings Masters

The Airthings Masters, the second leg of the Champions Chess Tour, begins on Boxing Day on Chess24. Once again, the tournament will begin with an all-play-all over just three days. The 12 players will be whittled down to eight for a knockout, which concludes over the weekend of January 2-3.

The winner of the Airthings Masters is guaranteed $60,000 (£46,000) from a $200,000 prize fund and a place in the Grand Tour Final in September. Carlsen is the clear favourite, but do expect him to be challenged by Wesley So, who defeated the champion in the final of the Skilling Open, the first leg of the Tour, and Hikaru Nakamura. Mercurial stars Ian Nepomniachtchi and Daniil Dubov also play, the latter defeated Carlsen online in the Lindores Abbey tournament in May.

Tactical Skills

Dubov demonstrated his tactical skills in this game from the recent Russian Championship.

A. Goganov – D. Dubov
Catalan Opening

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.g3 dxc4 5.Bg2 a6 6.0-0 Nc6 7.Bg5!? Be7 8. e3 0-0 9.Qc1 h6 10.Bxf6 Bxf6 11.Nfd2 e5! (This thematic central counter enables Black to equalise) 12.d5 Ne7 13.Nxc4? (13.Nc3 was the way to go, and if 13…b5? 14.d6) 13…Nxd5! 14.Rd1 e4!

A. Goganov – D. Dubov

(Not for the first time Dubov has seen deeper than his opponent. Now Black won’t lose a piece down the d-file and his bishops enjoy open lines) 15.Bxe4 c6 16.Nc3 Be6 17.Ne2 Qe7 18.Nd4 Bg4 19.Bf3 Bh3 20.Bg2? (Meek. 20.e4 Nc7 21.Nb3 followed by Qe3 was a better try) 20…Bxg2 21.Kxg2 Rfd8 (The bishop-pair has gone, but the bishop on f6 is a bit of a monster and ideally placed to support a queenside expansion) 22.a3 c5! 23.Nf3 b5 24.Ncd2 c4 25.e4 Nb6 26.Re1 Nd7! (The knight will eye d3. 26…Na4! 27.e5 Bg5 was also good) 27.Re2 Nc5 28.e5 Bg5 29.Nxg5 hxg5 30.Qc2 Rd3! (Even stronger than 30…Nd3. Dubov wants to attack) 31.Rae1 Rad8 32.Ne4 Qb7

The Airthings Masters Prelude

33.Kg1 (Escaping the pin. For today’s puzzle, how would Black have met 33.f3?) 33…Ne6! (The knight is now bound for f3) 34.Re3 g4 35.Rxd3 cxd3 36.Qc1 Nd4 0-1

33.f3 g4! rips open the key long diagonal, and if 34.fxg4? Nxe4 35.Rxe4 Rd2+
