Today’s Daily Telegraph chess column reports on the recent European Online Blitz Championship.

It will be interesting to see how things will pan out over the next few years. Will we have two ‘rolls of honour’ for every major event – one for the online versions and another for traditional, over-the-board tournaments? Or will one of the two (re)emerge as the norm?

Malcolm Pein on…the European Online Blitz Championship

England international Gawain Jones took the European Online Blitz Chess Championship the weekend before last with notable victories over David Navara and Alexei Shirov in the semifinal and final respectively.

Jones had to fight his way through a strong qualifier to get into the last 16 and scored 8.5/11, which placed him seventh. Jones’s first opponent was Bogdan-Daniel Deac of Romania, who proved to be the most successful junior player in the competition. In the last eight, Jones defeated Manuel Petrosyan of Armenia in an Armageddon play-off after a crazy match ended 2-2.

The match against Navara also went to Armageddon with Jones Black and needing only a draw. Jones kept his position solid and when Navara felt obliged to complicate, Jones struck.
