Surprising. Flexible. Chameleonic!
Force White to play perfectly not to concede an effortless equality
Sometimes, you face an opening and you realize it’s so good, that you have to play it yourself.
That’s what happened to FIDE Master Amro el Jawich with the Nimzowitch Sicilian when preparing for a game against GM Alexander Rakhmanov, one of its leading experts.
The Nimzowitch Sicilian is one of those variations everybody knows of, but few have studied it. Its flexibility, however, makes it a common surprise weapon at all levels. So when you pick it up, you’re signing up for a practical advantage:
You’ll always be the better-prepared player
The Nimzo-Sicilian confronts White with a decision as early as move two with the rare
1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nf6. Should they push forward with
3.e5, or should they play it safe with
3.Nc3?
The former seems more aggressive, but Amro’s titanic analytical work dispels the dangers.
In fact, Black’s choices are so rich that you’ll have
not one but two options in the mainline. One of them is tactical mayhem best suited for blitz or must-win games. The other is more ‘correct’ and to the taste of engines -a better fit for classical chess.
However, many will prefer
3.Nc3 wishing to transpose to some well-known Sicilian with
3...d6, but we go
3...d5 fighting for the center!
There, White has to play the very best moves, or else, we get easy equality. You can also take advantage of the move-orders, like transposing to a French defense where White committed to a move they didn’t want to play.
I am ready to take risks from a personal perspective
We won’t get 0.00 in all lines but our position is dynamic and practical, so there will always be chances to play for a win.
Moreover, it’s White’s onus to play perfect chess for several moves, to put some pressure on. Otherwise, we’ll have a healthy middlegame with nothing to worry about.
