IM Sielecki reveals a completely new and daring Sicilian!
After months of experimenting and testing, our favorite openings specialist International Master Christof Sielecki returns to Chessable with something really exciting, a completely new variation in the Sicilian! That’s right. This Sicilian is so new
there is no known opening theory on it except for this repertoire right here on Chessable. And, who better to guide you than Chessable’s favorite openings specialist and author of
Fight Like Magnus: The Sicilian A completely new Sicilian Defense
So, what exactly
is the Dirty Harry Sicilian?
It's a variation in the open Sicilian that arises after the moves
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 h5!And, why is it called the Dirty Harry?! The name is an ode to Harry the h-pawn, a term of endearment coined and popularized by Chessable's in-house mad Grandmaster Simon Williams. And, at the same time the name is a reference to the American neo-noir action-thriller Dirty Harry, starring Clint Eastwood, which features an easily triggered and highly aggressive inspector.
As soon as you push the h-pawn to h5 it's like something psychological happens to most of my opponents online. They just go crazy. They're really triggered. -IM Christof Sielecki
And, so the Dirty Harry variation of the Sicilian was born.
The shocking h-pawn thrust comes with aggressive intentions. Black simply wants to plant a knight on g4 almost immediately to either start a very early kingside attack or to cause mayhem in the White camp
This opening line contains lots of traps and tricks as none of White's usual set-ups work against 5...h5! So, it has immense surprise value.
Shockingly sound and aggressive
Can Black really get away with this? IM Sielecki asked the same question during his months-long research. And, after months of putting this line to the test with the latest engines Stockfish and Leela, Sielecki found no clear refutation for White. Not only is it playable but it's very fun and often leads to positions that are very un-Sicilian like with early queen moves and quick checkmates. Sure, this opening is double-edged. But, if you're the better prepared player then this is an especially tricky and dangerous line to face for any opponent.
Here's what this repertoire offers:
Harry! Harry! Harry!
