The Delightfully Devilish Devin Gambit
A surprise weapon in your opening repertoire always comes in handy - whether for blitz or to just change things up and take your opponents out of prep.
The Devilish Devin Gambit does just that - by move 3 your opponents will be scratching their heads over what to do.
It's a very rare opening, but one that will come in handy when you're confident you can win the tactical battle against your opponent and don't want to test their mainline theoretical knowledge.
And it's starting to get attention from some big names, such as Hikaru Nakamura, Fabiano Caruana, and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. So it's not some one-trick pony - this is a surprise weapon with some real bite to it!
It starts off with the moves
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.g4!?
It looks crazy, and in fact it's only been played in less than 1% of games, so the theory is definitely fresh. With such little attention being paid to it, there is no way Black will know what to do better than you.
And it scores surprisingly well - in online databases, for +1000 rating in bullet, White won 51% of the games - with a 53% win rate if Black accepts the gambit.
That's because, White equalizes in all lines, even when Black plays perfectly!
The repertoire is divided into four parts:
🧨
The Devin Gambit Declined 3…d5 - continue your assault on the knight and either create a pawn storm on the kingside or open up the g-file for an attack
🧨
The Devin Gambit Accepted 3…Nxg4 - scoring particularly well for White, you get full justification for the gambit with a massive pawn center
🧨
Lines after 3…Bb4+ - resolve the tension immediately with 4.Bd2
🧨
All other sidelinesAdditionally, you get a chapter with 14 model games dedicated to the Devin Gambit and dedicated chapters on typical strategic maneuvers and tactics.
Your author Pawel Fiedor is a club-level player based in Dublin who has a very keen interest in opening theory.
