The Game of the Year! That is what people are saying about the game Malcolm Pein presents in today’s Daily Telegraph chess column.

The game features Daniil Dubov in sacrificial mood – and not for the first time.

Malcolm Pein on…The Game of the Year

Daniil Dubov played what is being hailed as the game of the year in the last round of the 73rd Russian Championship. The 24-year-old Muscovite has a seemingly inexhaustible arsenal of novelties and produces a new twist on the 19th-century Giuoco Piano.

D. Dubov – S. Karjakin

1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.c3 Nf6 5.d4 exd4 6.b4!? Bb6 7.e5 Ne4 8.Bd5 Nxc3 9.Nxc3 dxc3 10.Bg5 Ne7 (If 10…f6 11.Bh4! g5 12.Nxg5!) 11.0–0 h6 12.Bh4 0–0 13.Re1 Qe8 14.Bb3 a5 15.Bf6!!

Dubov Best Game

Dubov Queen Sacrifice

19.Qxg6!! (“I thought; Why not give me and the spectators a treat?” – Dubov. Not 19.Bxe6 Nf4 20.Qxc3 fxe6 when Black is all right, as 21.Bxg7 Qg6! wins) 19…fxg6 20.Rxe6 Qf7 (20…Qc6 21.Re7+ Qxc4 22.Rxg7+ Kh8 23.Rxc7+ Rxf6 24.Rxc4 Rxd6 25.Rxc3 should be a winning endgame for White)

21.Bxc3!! Kh8 22.Re4 Qf5?(22…Bxf2+! 23.Kxf2 Qf5! 24.Bd3 Qd5 25.Rd4 Qe6 appears to survive, as White’s three minor pieces lack stability and are harassed by the black queen) 23.Re7 Rg8 24.Bxg8 Rxg8 25.dxc7 (The comparison with Dubov’s queen sacrifice against Andrey Esipenko at the same event is striking. The pawn on c7 will eventually cost Black his bishop)

25…Qc2 26.Be5 Bxf2+ 27.Kh1 Bb6 28.h3 Kh7 (There is no hurry. Black’s rook is tied to the defence of g7 and his queen has to cover c8 else Rxg7+ diverts the rook and the c-pawn promotes) 29.Re1 a3 30.Kh2 g5 31.Nd4 Qc4 (31…Bxd4 32.Bxd4 Qc4 33.Rd7)

32.Nf5 Qxb4 33.Rc1 Kg6 34.Rxg7+ Kxf5 35.Rxg8 Bxc7 36.Bxc7 Qb2 37.Rc5+ Ke4
