Malcolm Pein dons the wig, puts on his sunglasses and polishes his teeth in today’s Daily Telegraph column, as he rolls back the years to put a ‘Tragedy’ in your head for the rest of the day.

Malcolm Pein on…A ‘Tragedy’

To paraphrase the Bee Gees, “Tragedy, when the clock has gone and you can’t go on”.

A sorry tale from the Polish European hybrid World Cup Qualifier, where White plays a model game only to lose on time as he is about to administer the coup de grace.

White’s opening is known as the London System with Nc3, Barry Attack, or Jobava London. I like to name it after its most successful practitioner.

1.d4 Nf6 2.Bf4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.e3 a6 5.h4! Bg7 6.h5 Nxh5 7.Rxh5 gxh5 8.Qxh5 e6 (8…c6 was Jobava – Savchenko, Bronstein Memorial Open, Minsk 2014. Jobava won a magical game, the end of which is today’s puzzle) 9.Nf3 Nd7 10.Qh2 (10.Ng5! Qf6 11.Nxe6! Qxe6 12.Nxd5 was also good, but very hard to assess) 10…c5 11.0–0–0 cxd4 12.exd4 Nf8 (12…Nf6 was much better) 13.Bc7 Qd7 14.Bd3 Ng6 15.Rh1 b5 16.Ba5 Bb7 17.Ne2 (Having ruled out queenside castling, White mobilises the reserves to the kingside) 17…Qe7 18.a3 Rc8 19.Bxg6 fxg6 (19…hxg6 20.Qxh8+ Bxh8 21.Rxh8+ Kd7 22.Ne5+ Kd6 23.Bb4+ is a lovely variation) 20.Nf4 Qd6 (The computer preferred 20.Kb1 because now 20…e5 21.dxe5 d4 was a chance for Black) 21.Bb4 Qc7 22.c3 Kd7 23.g3 Rce8 24.Ng5 Bc8 25.Re1 Kc6 26.Ngxe6 Qf7 27.Qg2! Qf5 (27…Bxe6 28.Rxe6+ Rxe6 29.Qxd5+)
