Malcolm Pein on…A Moscow Miniature

More entertainment from the Russian Team Championships in Sochi. In the ninth and final round last Monday there was an epic king hunt as GM Ivan Popov won this memorable miniature.

Black’s fate is quickly sealed. I suspect he missed White’s 12th move that forces the Black king into the open where it perishes, even in the absence of queens.

The perennial rivalry in Russian chess was evident yet again, as the tournament was won by the Bronze Horsemen of St Petersburg ahead of Moscow, with Gogolevsky 14 third.

White’s fifth move was first seen in Carlsen-Wojtaszek, Wijk Aan Zee, 2017. During the tournament, Carlsen’s trainer, Peter-Heine Nielsen, received an email from Greek IM Ioannis Simeonidis suggesting 5.Qd2. It’s an odd looking move, but it poses new problems and has become popular.
