Sethuraman Panayappan Sethuraman steadily climbed the rating ladder with breakout victories in the 2004 Asian Under 12 championship and 2009 World Under 16 championship. It wasn’t long until he got his grandmaster title, at just 18 years of age.
And the young Indian grandmaster’s star continues to rise in the chess world. GM Sethuraman reached international recognition with his appearance in the 2015 Chess World Cup and by clinching the number 1 spot in the 2016 Asian Chess Championship. He continues to dominate the rankings, and remains one of the top 10 chess players in India.
In 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic took away opportunities for over-the-board success, GM Sethuraman took on new challenges - this time as an author. Pouring his rich opening knowledge into text, he has contributed significantly to opening theory by finding new ways of challenging popular Open Sicilian variations such as the Najdorf and Taimanov.
