Miodrag Perunović is an International Master from Serbia.
He was first introduced to chess at the age of 12 when his brother taught him how to move the pieces. His family has a long chess tradition: his father is a Candidate Master, International Arbiter, and long-time delegate, while his brother is a 1st category player. Even his wife was the best player in her age group as a junior.
Miodrag’s first chess success was winning the city and regional junior championships with a perfect score. He followed this by placing 3rd in Serbia and 2nd in Yugoslavia in the U14 national championships. After that, he became a one-time champion and four-time vice-champion of Yugoslavia in classical chess for his age. He began to represent Yugoslavia internationally from 1997 when he participated in the World Junior championship in Yerevan and again at the 1999 European Championship in Patra.
His first major success after his junior career came in 2000 when he became the champion of Central Serbia. His results then stagnated for a while until 2003 when he had a major breakthrough. After achieving FM (FIDE Master) at the beginning of the year, he then went on to earn the International Master title 6 months later after scoring an unprecedented 7 IM (International Master) norms! He shifted his focus mainly to university and coaching but he is still an active and improving tournament player working hard to fulfill his chess dream of becoming a Grandmaster.
Miodrag also started coaching in 2005 and couldn’t even imagine the many successes his students would go on to achieve. Since coaching more than 700 students, from 117 countries and five continents, he established himself as one of the most successful and sought-after trainers, resulting in the FST title – FIDE Senior Trainer (the highest coaching title). He is also the Head coach of the Serbian National Team.
In November 2020, Miodrag also became the Chessable author for the first time with his landmark course Butcher the Sicilian.
