Mikhail Shereshevsky is chess trainer based in Sochi, Russia.
Born in Minsk, Belarus, his breakout success came at the age of 16, when he qualified for the adult USSR Championship. Though he did not place highly in that tournament, his talent was nonetheless recognized by the likes of GM Isaac Boleslavsky - who took him on as a student.
Under Boleslavsky’s mentorship, it wasn’t long before Shereshevsky was winning numerous high level tournaments in Belarus and Soviet national tournaments. In the 1980s, however, his interest turned more and more to coaching, and he began taking on his own students. Molding many of them into grandmasters, such as GM Aleksej Aleksandrov, he was officially recognized as a trainer by the Belarussian government.
Shereshevsky has also penned several books, which continue to serve as invaluable training tools in the 21st century. His magnum opus, Endgame Strategy, is widely considered essential reading for ambitious players, hailed by superstars such as Vladimir Kramnik and Magnus Carlsen as their formative guide to handling the endgame.
Considered to be one of the top trainers in the world, Shereshevsky now teaches chess at the prestigious Sirius Centre for Gifted Students in Russia. He shows no signs of slowing down, either. In 2022, he released a revised and expanded version of his classic Endgame Strategy, updating his masterpiece with contemporary examples and adding entirely new chapters for endgame success in the 2020s and beyond.
