Grandmaster Matthias Wahls is a chess instructor and author from Germany.
Achieving the grandmaster title in 1989, GM Wahls went on to dominate the German chess scene in the 1990s. In addition to representing Germany in the 1990 and 1992 Chess Olympiads, he attained impressive results in several German Chess Championships: 3rd place and 2nd place in 1994 and 1995, and 1st place back-to-back years in 1996 and 1997. His dominant play achieved him a peak ranking of 50th in the world at the time.
Semi-retiring from chess in 1998 to start his own business, GM Wahls has been inactive on the tournament scene, but his love for chess has never ceased. He has offered chess coaching for more than 30 years and has written several publications on openings and other topics.
