Keith Arkell is a British Grandmaster and former English Chess Champion.
Despite starting chess at the “old” age of 13, GM Arkell went on to lead a remarkable and well-respected career. He became a force in the world of British chess shortly after achieving the grandmaster title in 1995. Beginning with a first place finish in the 1998 British Rapidplay Championship, Arkell collected a slew of strong tournament results in the early 2000s - most notably a second place finish in the 2001 British Chess Championship.
But he achieved his strongest result well after he achieved his peak FIDE rating of 2545 in the 90s - in 2008, he tied for first in the British Chess Championship. Though losing in the tie-breaks for the overall British title, his performance as the best English player in the group crowned him Champion of England. He has remained a strong player until this day - winning the 2014 European Senior Chess Championship and 2021 British Online Championship to name a few.
GM Arkell is renowned in the chess community for his precise endgame technique, where he has continually shown that he can outplay top competition in theoretically equal positions. Fortunately for the Chessable community, he now shares this endgame wisdom in Arkell’s Endings, a terrific guide to taking middlegames into favorable endgames and winning them with the same exactitude GM Arkell is famous for.
