David Antón Guijarro is a Spanish Grandmaster jovially known as "El Niño". His several appearances in the Champions Chess Tour and victories in tournaments such as Tata Steel Challengers 2020 and the Spanish Championship 2020, make him one of the current trendy chess players.
After a frantic end of 2019, he crossed 2700 for the first time just before the COVID outbreak in March 2020, the third Spaniard to achieve this after Alexei Shirov and Paco Vallejo. Other notable results include European Individual runner-up in 2014, second in Gibraltar 2017 behind Nakamura, fifth in the FIDE Grand Swiss 2019 ahead of Carlsen, and first shared with Firouzja, Vidit, Duda and Shankland in the Prague Festival 2020.
David is known for hard work discipline, great theoretical knowledge and an ambitious style. Although his chess beginnings were relatively unimpressive compared to other elite players, he has compensated with slow but steady progress. Part of the formula for his success lies with IM David Martinez, who has been his coach since the age of 11.
The collaboration between the two took Anton from less than 1800 elo to the world elite and has lasted at least 15 years. In addition, together with Divis and GM Pepe Cuenca, he regularly participates in broadcasts on chess24.es where he analyzes live games, plays and shares his knowledge with the users.
Anton is the author of a complete repertoire for Black in the Double King Pawn based on the Open Spanish Variation. Since Anton adapted his repertoire exclusively to the King Double Pawn and has specialized in the Open Variation of the Spanish, it is a course of exceptional theoretical interest for players of any level.
